Abstract

Estimator variables refer to factors that influence identification but are not under the control of law enforcement. In this chapter, we discuss characteristics of the witness that can affect identification accuracy. Topics include whether the witness is a victim or a bystander. We also describe research concerning how the age of the witness can impact identification accuracy. Research concerning the impact of intoxication on eyewitness memory is also discussed. The chapter concludes with a discussion of whether police witnesses are more accurate than lay witnesses.
