Abstract

This chapter, “Theatre Workshop as Counterpublic,” begins a two-chapter discussion of the process of making The Wedding , a radio play that emerged as a result of the author’s devised theatre work with British Muslim youth. It attends to moments from the theatre-making process that did not make it into the script of The Wedding , capturing and attending to the process’ residual rather than central material. Working with these residues and emphasizing the workshop context, this chapter argues that the theatre workshop served as a counterpublic space in which British Muslim youth experimented with, resisted, upheld, built solidarities around, and sidestepped the sociopolitical narratives that they negotiate in their everyday lives.
