Abstract

This chapter introduces this book, with a particular focus on the learner populations of interest. This chapter begins by defining key terms and giving a brief overview of the relevant grammatical properties of Russian. It then discusses who second language (L2) learners of Russian are and what major factors influence the L2 acquisition process. This chapter also motivates the inclusion of heritage speakers (HSs) in this volume, addressing the similarities and differences between L2 learners and HSs. This chapter ends with an outline of the primary goals of this volume.
