Developing pragmatic competence in Russian as a second language
Abstract
While the previous five chapters addressed the RSLA of grammatical properties, this chapter takes up the emergence of pragmatic competence in L2 Russian. The phenomena reviewed in this chapter include politeness and formality in communication, pragmatic use of diminutives, and speech acts. Particular attention is paid to the T-V distinction between informal and formal second-person pronouns, which presents a special challenge to learners. This chapter also discusses approaches to teaching L2 Russian learners about pragmatic competence.
