Abstract

Theraplay is an evidence-based, attachment-focused therapeutic model that is uniquely suited for treating children who have experienced sexual abuse (CSA). This approach emphasizes the importance of building a secure, trusting relationship between the child and therapist, fostering emotional regulation, and enhancing interpersonal connection through playful, structured interactions. The core principles of Theraplay – engagement, nurture, challenge, and structure – directly address the trauma-related disruptions in attachment and self-esteem that often arise with CSA. By using carefully designed activities that promote positive emotional experiences and safe, consistent boundaries, Theraplay facilitates healing in a manner that respects the child’s developmental stage. Additionally, Theraplay’s emphasis on nonverbal communication helps children express and process complex emotions that may be difficult to articulate. Through fostering secure attachments, improving self-regulation, and providing a corrective relational experience, Theraplay offers a powerful framework for restoring a family’s sense of safety, trust, and resilience in the aftermath of sexual abuse.
