Abstract

This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of Adlerian Play Therapy (AdPT) as a therapeutic approach for addressing the complex needs of sexually abused children. AdPT, rooted in Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology, uniquely integrates play and core psychological principles to create a holistic intervention. The chapter begins with an overview of Individual Psychology’s fundamental tenets, emphasizing the holistic view of individuals and the significance of belonging. Kottman’s development of AdPT is discussed, highlighting its four phases: building a relationship, exploring lifestyle, gaining insight, and reorienting/re-educating. The Crucial Cs – Courage, Connect, Capable, and Count – provide a lens for assessment and treatment planning, with a focus on fostering resilience in children. While the research support for AdPT with children who have experienced sexual abuse is limited, there is support for AdPT as a trauma-informed counseling approach. The application of AdPT with sexually abused children is explored through a clinical case study of Cecilia, illustrating the targeted interventions used to address her struggles with the Crucial Cs. The chapter also acknowledges the limitations of AdPT in treating victims of sexual abuse, including the need for additional modalities and specialized training.
