A contextualist approach to interpreting the Qur'an today
Abstract
In recent years, the idea of interpreting the Qur’an in light of contemporary realities – often called contextualist interpretation – has become increasingly important. This approach tries to take seriously both the historical context in which the Qur’an was first revealed and the very different world in which Muslims live today. As Muslim societies confront new questions and challenges – around family structures, human rights, environmental responsibility, or scientific and technological change – it has become clear that traditional readings alone cannot always offer sufficient guidance. In areas such as family law, for example, many scholars and thinkers are exploring how the ethical principles of the Qur’an might be applied in ways that reflect today’s understandings of justice and social wellbeing.
