Abstract

This chapter addresses data protection issues and management of the administrative tasks associated with the role. Confidentiality is a critical issue in expert assessments since a great deal of personal data is disclosed. There are rules established by the court to protect the identity of children in proceedings and, in addition, experts must comply with UK General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). In order to cope with large amounts of confidential data, manage workloads, schedule appointments and keep accounts, experts need to set up and regularly review effective and flexible data-management systems for both paper and electronic records. Experts are required to carry professional liability insurance and, as they are working with vulnerable individuals, to obtain an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
