Abstract

The central argument of this book is that Deuteronomy writes “Israel” into existence. This claim rests on several historical assumptions. These concern Deuteronomy itself, its writers, ancient southwest Asian treaty agreements, their governing rationality, and how the writers’ appropriation of this rationality shapes the “Israel” they create. A brief analysis of Deut 5 illustrates how attention to this rationality helps explain the creation of Israel’s subjectivity in Deuteronomy. The concluding section provides an overview of the remaining chapters.
