Abstract

This chapter focuses on inclusive language, which is complementary to and often combined with plain language. Inclusive language seeks to be free of bias, and this chapter investigates ways of recognizing and overcoming unconscious bias to write in a way that respects readers. Like plain language, the principle of inclusive language can apply to any language, but the specific techniques for implementing it will differ from one language to the next. Examples are drawn from several languages to demonstrate different approaches to writing in a more inclusive way.
