Abstract

This chapter demonstrates how plain language principles and techniques can be applied to a variety of document types in four communicative settings: government communication, legal communication, health communication, and science communication. It considers which linguistic features that are commonly found in these various text types present challenges for plain language, and it examines solutions to address these challenges. The chapter also discusses different types of job opportunities for plain language practitioners in these communicative settings.
