Abstract

This chapter brings together ways of understanding sound design, music, and noise in examining how sonic scapes in mukbang are made, curated, and consumed. Food sounds especially offer viewers intimacies, helping them establish relationships with mukbangers and the foods they interact with, at a digital distance. Sounds, music and noise provide a layer of communication and meaning-making in mukbang. They have varying qualities that can help establish the tone or atmosphere of a performance, and lure, enchant, or even repel viewers. We outline the different elements of mukbang sound, noise, and music, including ASMR.
