Abstract

The internet makes it easy to bank, shop, socialize and manage our lives from anywhere. But every connection is also a potential entry point for hackers. The web has become a crime scene, and no one is immune. If you haven’t been a victim of cybercrime yet, chances are you will be. Hackers no longer need to be technical geniuses; they can just rent the tools or leverage artificial intelligence. State-sponsored spies, ransomware gangs, deepfake scammers and influence-for-hire trolls are turning the internet into a battlefield. This chapter explores how cybercrime has evolved into a billion-dollar underground industry, what the law is doing—and failing to do—to stop it, and why ethics matters in deciding how we fight back.
