Abstract

With so much personal information collected and shared online, privacy is more important than ever. Yet U.S. law hasn’t kept up. Federal privacy rules still lean on 1980s-era statutes, so some states have stepped in to fill the gaps, while Europe’s legal framework has become a global standard that many companies follow. The result is a patchwork of protections that often leaves consumers confused and vulnerable. Today’s privacy challenges go far beyond websites and social media, extending to connected devices, workplace monitoring, location tracking and sensitive biometric data like fingerprints and DNA. Understanding this fractured legal landscape is the first step toward knowing your rights and shaping smarter protections in the digital age.
