Abstract

This chapter examines the role and effectiveness of collective investor initiatives in sustainable finance, analysing how collaborative approaches can support investors in achieving better sustainability outcomes. The chapter explains why investors participate these collective initiatives. It also identifies three primary mechanisms through which collective initiatives drive change: standard-setting that harmonises expectations and practices across industries, advocacy that leverages collective influence with corporations and policymakers, and knowledge-sharing that facilitates best practice exchange among members. However, these initiatives also face significant challenges including free-riding, external pressures that can lead to member withdrawals, legitimacy challenges, and enforcement difficulties.
