Abstract

This chapter examines whether sustainable investment strategies deliver superior financial performance compared to conventional investment approaches. The chapter explains why sustainable investment might outperform, including better risk identification and management, insurance-like effects during economic downturns, and growing demand for sustainable assets. It also explains why sustainable investment might underperform, including constrained investment universes, higher transaction costs, and potentially inflated valuations. The chapter also reveals that the academic evidence generally supports a neutral to positive relationship between sustainable investment and financial performance, with most meta-studies concluding that sustainable investing does not inherently impair financial outcomes and may deliver comparable or superior returns. However, these findings vary depending on the specific investment strategies employed, performance measurement approaches, timeframes analysed, geographic scope, and asset classes examined.
