Abstract

Building on the generic theme of training in the previous chapter, the concept of management development and, in more contemporary jargon, talent management is outlined. The importance of the effective training and development of managers in achieving business goals and in retaining the most talented members of the managerial workforce for the longer term is emphasised. There is recent research on the competencies required of hospitality managers in both SME and multi-national organisations, as well as consideration of types of training and education available to aspiring hospitality professionals. Succession planning is dealt with in some detail as an integral element of talent management and continuity.
