Abstract

This chapter concentrates on important management career and HRM issues arising from the global expansion of the hospitality industry. The development of very high profile brands is traced, along with considerations of the implications for HRM policy and practices, especially training and development of critical multi-unit managers. The role of this ‘area manager’ is considered in detail as it has become a much sought after development position towards more senior jobs above unit manager level. There is also consideration of future challenges for such roles given the continuing development of alternative business formats and structures across the industry and the increasing usage of mobile technology in managing performance across these corporate giants.
