Abstract

This chapter traces the development of the concept of organisational culture and how this development has been in parallel with the changing significance of HRM. There is a consideration of the different perspectives and debates around the nature and meaning of culture and how it applies to hospitality organisations, the difference between culture and climate, and whether or not workplace culture can be changed and shaped by management. The close relationship between organisational culture and contemporary HRM practices is examined and the more specific cultural issues pertaining to the global hospitality industry itself are explored through discussion concerning service culture.
