Excavating Environmental Anthropology's Challenging Foundations
Abstract
Environmental anthropology reflects the collision between two somewhat incompatible traditions – the colonial world out of which the discipline emerged and the environmental tradition that in many ways challenges the colonialist past and the industrialization that is its offspring. I critique some of the problematic assumptions and paradoxes that arise from this incompatibility, arguing that these can only be resolved within a systemic understanding that includes the human, and concluding that only an environmental anthropology that is true to the wholeness of humanity can be true to the rest of the natural world.
