The wounds of rape in the ‘rape capital of the world’
Abstract
This chapter explores how womxn make sense of their experience of rape within ‘the rape capital of the world’. It examines how the notion of ‘the rape capital’ is produced by both spectacular and statistical representations of rape, which construct rape as an act of extreme physical violence. Beyond a narrow focus on physical wounds, the chapter articulates the wounding of rape in relation to violation, dehumanisation, annihilation and a sense of being disjointed. The chapter also explores the uneven context of wounding, in which certain experiences of rape are more easily dismissed, disavowed and denied.
