Abstract

This chapter develops the notion of wakeful hope to articulate the hope that is cultivated in the wake of rape. The chapter situates this hope in relation to the politics of hope in post-apartheid South Africa, as well as in relation to an increasing sense of hopelessness in the face of ongoing sexual and gender-based violence. It traces how womxn practise hope through hoping with others. The chapter explores wakeful hope as entangled with mourning, which refuses the conditions of the present and begins to constitute a less violent future.
