Designing Interiors for Psychological Wellbeing
Abstract
There is a growing interest in designing interiors that support long-lasting wellbeing, going beyond pleasure and user-friendliness. Home products can transform interiors by fostering autonomous behaviour, social engagement, and learning, among other benefits. This chapter examines how such products can contribute to designing interiors that foster psychological wellbeing. Emphasis is given to four key areas: kitchen, living areas, bedroom, and home office. Designing domestic spaces that support psychological wellbeing involves considering users&s; diverse needs and integrating technology thoughtfully. While the theoretical approach presented has the potential to inspire design practices, empirical research is required to validate them and propose design guidelines. This chapter advances the current literature by providing insight into how home products can be used in interior design to foster long-lasting contributions to human life as psychological wellbeing leads to better physical, subjective, and functional health.
