Abstract

Doll&s;s houses, toy theatres, and model railways emerged as “architectural” environments for imaginative, spatialised play in the 19th century, but the disciplined artefact of the architectural model frequently implies a fixed and frozen idealised “completed” space. Yet “the essential theatricality of all miniatures”, and the precedent of those narrative-driven playful environments, asks that the space inside the architectural model be activated through performative acts of “play”, to “toy with it”.
