Abstract

This chapter presents the ‘Dual-function Instruments’ project, which explores the integration of live sampling technology with conventional musical instruments. In these set-ups, instruments have a double function, producing sounds as they typically would while simultaneously serving as samplers that capture and play back sounds in real time. This additional functionality allows performers to control digital sampling directly through their established instrumental techniques, thereby collapsing the contrasting domains of acoustic performance and digital technology. For instance, a pianist might trigger a sample playback by pressing a piano key, combining acoustic and digital sounds. This approach also generates exciting alternative opportunities for musical expression within the design of digital musical instruments. First, the chapter considers the concepts of sampling and modified instruments, before providing an account of the technological development that underpins the dual-function instruments, including the creation of a ‘laser piano’. This sets the context for analyses of two compositions written for this project – Streams and Designate – that demonstrate some creative possibilities of this approach. Finally, the discussion also addresses the broader implications for musical expressivity and the evolving role of technology in contemporary performance contexts.
