Abstract

This chapter explores creative experimentation with Dolby Atmos technology in music production through a process-based sensemaking approach. Focusing on the micro-level, iterative processes involved in creating immersive audio, it examines how artists and engineers navigate the complexities of this emerging format. Drawing on sensemaking models by Pratt, Weick and Rutledge, we analyse decision-making strategies during the Atmos tracking and mixing of work composed by The Radio Science Orchestra, blending both new and archival recordings. The research highlights how creators engage with this novel audio system through an evolutionary interplay of past experiences and future possibilities, contributing to academic and practical insights into the evolving landscape of music technology.
