Emily Dickinson's “Theatre of Matter,” Act II
Abstract
Chapter 5 , Act II of Dickinson’s “theatre of matter”, considers the various states of matter and the processes of condensation and sublimation enacted by the lyric voice and connects the evanescence of the lyric voice and Dickinson’s working on air as material to Shakespeare’s “spirits” and air-related metaphors. As in the previous chapter, I advocate for a haptic, queer lyric reading in order to give Dickinson’s sensual and sensory lyric its full dimension.
