Performing Transition*
Abstract
Chapter 6 situates Dickinson in the context of a nation whose geographical, cultural, and political identity was in a profound state of flux, and I examine how Dickinson performs transition*, as Halberstam understands it. In this transitional context, I explore Dickinson’s fascination for the tipping point, the precise moment when things shift, as well as her construction of highly dramatic neutral and liminal spaces.
