Case eight
Abstract
Cappadocia, a region renowned for its surreal landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has emerged as a multifaceted tourist destination attracting diverse global travelers. Tourism plays a pivotal role in the region’s economy, with activities like hot air ballooning alone generating approximately €78 million in the first nine months of 2019. However, despite its appeal, promoting Cappadocia has posed significant challenges. Shifting tourism trends – from a dominance of Japanese and French visitors in the late 20th century to a growing influx from China, South Korea, and the Middle East – highlight the need for adaptive marketing strategies. Historically, fragmented promotional efforts, limited resources, and the absence of a centralized destination management organization have hindered the region’s visibility and growth. This case study explores the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency’s (TGA) Integrated Marketing Communication Strategy, which combines traditional and digital marketing with public relations to reposition Cappadocia as a destination offering a rich mix of attractions. The case provides insights into strategic tourism marketing and destination branding, offering practical learning outcomes for students and professionals in tourism and hospitality. It also serves as a foundation for classroom discussions on marketing effectiveness, audience targeting, and the role of coordinated communication in destination development.
