Abstract

Participatory methodologies are increasingly being employed in sports studies, as they seek to challenge the hegemony of knowledge production and drive research impact through meaningfully involving community partners within the research process. In this chapter, we introduce participatory research (PR) methodologies including different approaches, applications and key principles. We then explore PAR in depth, identifying seven key stages of the research process and highlighting general considerations at each stage. Last, we draw on our individual and collective experiences of conducting a PAR Sport for Development project in Toronto to offer critical reflections from diverse perspectives.
