Abstract

This chapter focuses on the use of visual methods within qualitative sport research. The growth of visual methods within qualitative research is explored first, before turning to consider its applications and advantages. Three different types of visual methods are then introduced and considered in greater detail, spanning found visual materials, research-produced visual resources and finally participant-produced visual data. A brief discussion is also offered, distinguishing between the research approaches of PhotoVoice and photo-elicitation. The chapter concludes with a researcher vignette, offering an applied example of using visual methods within a qualitative PhD sport research project focusing on the London 2012 Olympics and suggestions for helpful further reading for any students considering the use of visual methods within their own research projects.
