Abstract

This chapter provides readers with an introduction to IPA. Primarily recognised as a methodological approach within qualitative research, IPA is also acknowledged as a data analysis technique within this broader framework. To provide readers with a comprehensive understanding, the chapter first offers a foundational exploration of IPA as a methodology, detailing its philosophical underpinnings and design approach. It then examines the data analysis process within IPA, demonstrating how detailed steps are used to provide interpretative insight, where key considerations and researcher tips are detailed thoroughly. To consolidate the reader’s understanding and facilitate a deeper exploration of areas pertinent to IPA, the chapter concludes with a series of seminar tasks. These tasks are designed to stimulate critical thinking and provide interactive learning experiences by encouraging readers to reflect on the methodological intricacies of IPA and its application within the context of sport. Finally, the chapter recommends further readings that delve into both the theoretical and practical elements of IPA. These are intended to guide readers towards more applied and accessible literature on IPA, enabling them to extend their learning and engage with advanced concepts and practices within this area.
