Abstract

In this chapter, we introduce a functional approach to language. This chapter continues to illustrate how teachers can develop a shared metalanguage for teaching language explicitly. To begin working with a functional metalanguage, we introduce some important concepts that allow us to connect patterns of language in school texts to their contexts of learning.
