Abstract

This chapter addresses the development of the term ‘queer’ and its application to translation and translation studies since the 1990s. It starts with three examples of academic work that apply a homosexual angle to the study of translation and then moves on to an overview of how queer theory has made its way into broader translation studies – in historical studies of translators or authors, through practices of re-reading and re-translation, and by expanding the theoretical view of reading and translating as one that queers a text. It notes the close relations between feminist and queer strategies and practices of translation.
