Abstract

This chapter is concerned with feminist rereading and rewriting/retranslating of existing texts. It engages with the controversies around the English translations of Simone de Beauvoir and other ‘key’ texts, such as the Bible. It examines and compares ‘pre-feminist’ and ‘post-feminist’ translations of certain proto-feminist texts to study the effects of feminist retranslations. Further, it traces a history of ‘lost’ or forgotten women translators, their legacies, and their representation.
