Reflections
Abstract
I present here my impressions of this volume’s chapters. First, I provide a general overview of the situation of Quechua, a language spoken by millions but in danger of extinction. I also examine bilingual education in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, as part of their language and education policies and the challenges they face, and Quechua teaching materials, as presented in the chapters on the Westernization of linguistic descriptions, the development of a small-scale alternative text for an Amazonian variant, and the experience of the Ayni text in three varieties of Southern Quechua. Finally, I provide some impressions of the problems presented by the assessment instruments, IRIS and ACTFL for Amazonian Kichwa (which also includes innovative teaching experiences) and the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview for Southern Quechua. I conclude with some final reflections.
