Abstract

In this chapter, the objectives of the volume are presented and defined. Overall, this volume aims to build the capacity of Quechua language stakeholders in teaching, learning, and assessing proficiency in this Indigenous language. Many obstacles persist for Quechua, despite the fact that this less commonly taught language (LCTL) continues to be the most widely spoken of the Indigenous languages of the Americas, with nearly ten million speakers primarily located in the South American Andes. This work illuminates and interrogates barriers to Quechua language instruction and assessment within the United States, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru and offers suggestions and solutions.
