Abstract

Chapter 3 covers innate behaviors, which are genetically programmed responses to environmental stimuli. They include reflexes and instincts. The chapter begins with exploring various kinds of reflexes, which require only a connection between a sense organ and the muscles needed to activate them. Next, it explains how instincts are innate patterns of species-specific behaviors and are insufficient to explain the wide range of human behaviors. However, it also describes how behavioral responses can be amplified by what are known as supernormal stimuli. How these stimuli are used in media and advertising to influence behavior is briefly explored. The chapter concludes with a description of ethological approaches to studying behavior. These include analyzing the sequential organization of behavior, categorizing behavior into appetitive and consummatory behaviors, and the behavior systems approach, which highlights the specific neural systems activated to achieve particular goals.
