Abstract

This chapter explores leadership development as an element of gifted services at the secondary level, addressing the challenges of differentiating leadership experiences for advanced learners. While many gifted programs emphasize the potential for these students to become future leaders, the specifics of how to foster leadership skills remain unclear. The chapter discusses the role of schools and extracurricular activities in developing leadership and the importance of providing targeted experiences that enhance skills such as problem-solving and decision-making. The debate surrounding the most effective settings for leadership development—within and outside of school environments—is also examined. While addressing distinctions between adult and youth leadership development, the chapter highlights the need for programs that prioritize student voice, decision-making, and community engagement. Drawing on current research, it provides insight into how educators can create meaningful, authentic leadership opportunities for gifted students that align with their specific needs and abilities. The chapter concludes by exploring existing programs and resources, offering suggestions for effective implementation, and emphasizing the importance of fostering leadership as a process deeply connected to students&s; communities.
