Regional securitisation
Abstract
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia experienced significant political and economic turmoil, which influenced the development and execution of its foreign policy. This chapter expands the discussion of the securitisation of terrorism to the regional level, looking at how Moscow embedded the principles of securitisation into foreign policy and the results they have achieved. This chapter discusses the main political and security challenges Russia faced in the region following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and shows how the political uncertainty in the post-Soviet space contributed to the opportunities for securitisation. It also analyses various regional alliances in Eurasia that have become platform for delivering securitisation rhetoric to paint a fuller picture of how inseparable securitisation has become from Russian foreign policy.
