Abstract

The primary session goals are to review the 5-step model of problem solving (Aim, Brainstorm, Choose, Do, and Evaluate) and practice applying the first 3 steps to solving academic problems within session. In the large group, caregivers and teens get practice with identifying a problem, brainstorming solutions, and evaluating the pros and cons before choosing a solution. In the teen group, the teens receive additional practice using the first 3 steps of problem solving for a teen who wants to improve their grade in math. In the caregiver group, the caregivers discuss how they can help their teen become more independent with solving problems at home and school. Caregivers also review how evidence-based strategies will be introduced in future sessions as a possible solution to common academic challenges. For the Real World Practice assignment, the teen and their caregiver will identify a challenge at home and go through the first 3 steps of problem solving.
