The international trade in whale commodities during the rise of the whaling South Atlantic, 1750–1850
Abstract
This chapter examines whaling activities from the Brazilian colonial period to the beginning of the nineteenth century. It analyzes how the whaling was structured and practiced on the Brazilian coast, highlighting some of its regions, the types of whales, and the number of animals killed in certain periods. The articulation of the Brazilian industry with the international commodity markets, especially during the Industrial Revolution, is also part of the scope of this. Finally, it explores the decrease in the number of whales on the Brazilian coast as a result of the presence of foreigners in the South Atlantic, particularly English and North American vessels.
