Abstract

Beyond the basics presented in earlier chapters, this chapter introduces some concepts and techniques that will enable the reader to produce more interesting and nuanced mixes. Topics discussed include how, when, and why to use multiple reverbs, layer effects, and stylising effects. Compression techniques are explored in greater detail to facilitate an understanding of knee shapes, different compression technology types and their sonic characteristics, and compression techniques utilising multiple compressors on single sound sources. Sidechaining is introduced, to enable the reader to further enhance the clarity of a mix if necessary. More complex modern compression technologies and compression-derived processors are described. Harmonic content processors are introduced, including how to use them creatively to add character to a mix.
