Abstract

This chapter begins by discussing procedures that will make the mixing process smoother and tasks that should be completed prior to mixing. It then highlights several ways of starting and progressing through a mix and possible reasons for using each method. A suggested beginner’s method of working through channel processing is presented, along with reasons for observing best practices. The rationale for referencing commercial mixes is also explored, along with what to listen for in a reference mix. Two different ways of structuring gain and fader positions are presented, and fader automation and modes are discussed. The chapter closes by outlining some common novice mixing mistakes so that the reader can avoid them.
