Abstract

This chapter starts by discussing the complex realities of implementing processing during mixing and how it becomes a non-linear cyclic process which is started linearly. It presents a more realistic order of processing for intermediates to use to enable them to move efficiently through the mixing process. Various phase problems are presented, so that the reader knows how to identify and fix them. Techniques to give a mix interest and increased ear candy are included, including stereo image activation techniques and automation of plug-ins and sends. The difference between stems and tracks is explained. Multiple track grouping techniques are discussed, so that the reader knows when to use each one and for what purpose. Track compression, bus compression, and master bus procession are described, so that the reader knows what each one is for and when to use it. The chapter closes by discussing summing mixing and why some engineers use it.
