Abstract

In this chapter, the typical frequency balances of several musical styles are presented. The importance of musical arrangement to the timbre of a mix is highlighted. Manipulating frequency balance through a mix to create climax and release is discussed. The main tool of frequency balance – EQ – is discussed: what is it and what are the tools and their controls? Different types of EQ technologies and filters are discussed, including how they combine into typical EQ sections on mixers and in plug-ins. Characteristic frequency ranges of sounds typically found in pop and rock music are explored to help the reader identify frequency ranges that might need EQ-ing.
