Abstract

The previous chapter showed how the distinctive origins of the US – from its colonial and slave beginnings to the development of its particular capital accumulation processes, racialized social structures, and state policies – combined to shape patterns of migration, inequality, class conflict, politics, and immigrant incorporation in the US during the 19 th century and early 20 th centuries. This chapter sheds light on similar American structures and processes that produce comparable patterns during the contemporary period from 1970 to 2025. 1
