Abstract

This chapter explores the paradoxical nature of the United States’ youth sports development system, which consistently produces elite athletes and championship teams despite its fragmented and seemingly haphazard approach. The United States is often heralded for this international sporting success, yet its youth sports and athlete development processes reflect an absence of governance and policy structures. This chapter explores the roots of how the U.S. system’s approach is influenced by its non-interventionist governance philosophy and a market-driven development system that still reflects a Cold War-era sociopolitical agenda. Further, this analysis provides insights into how a nation with significant international success can operate with such a disjointed development system fuelled by rampant commercialisation of the youth sports ecosystem, offering a critical perspective on the underlying mechanisms and tensions within American sport policy and governance.
