Abstract

As global temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, the sport community faces unprecedented challenges that demand innovative solutions and a reimagining of sports development practices. In this chapter, I examine the complex relationship between climate change and sports development, exploring how the latter can adapt to the impacts of the former. I begin by detailing the current and projected effects of climate change on sporting events, infrastructure, and participation across all levels of sport. I then analyse the sport industry’s response to these challenges, which include the creation of sustainability initiatives, policy frameworks, and adaptation strategies. Next, I turn to key opportunities for sports development projects to contribute positively to climate action and environmental awareness, highlighting the potential of sport to educate, inspire, and drive change. I conclude by considering future directions for climate-resilient sports development, including emerging research needs, potential innovations, and critical issues that must be addressed. By embracing sustainability as a core principle, sports development projects can not only adapt to climate change but also become a powerful force for building more resilient, sustainable, and equitable communities in the face of one of humankind’s most pressing global challenges.
