Abstract

High-quality nursing care is a goal and requirement in Norwegian healthcare services. However, municipal healthcare services are challenged by a shortage of registered nurses and difficulties in recruiting and retaining them. Therefore, the chapter explores what is essential for nurses working in municipal home healthcare services to remain in their current position. It does so by drawing on salutogenic health perspectives used as analytical tools to explore examples of how nurses express their experiences. The empirical examples demonstrate that the home healthcare nurses remain because they travel in scenic surroundings, are welcome at the patients’ homes, have a community with colleagues, and have variety in everyday working life. The chapter concludes that salutogenic processes appear essential to remain. Remaining seems possible for the nurses who engage in a home healthcare environment perceived as meaningful, comprehensible, and manageable, which provides the nurses with a sense of coherence and a feeling of success. If such an achievement is maintained, the need to recruit new nurses may be somewhat reduced.
